As to my changing ocuupations so late in life, 9/11 was a wake up for me. I remember spending that day peering at the four walls of my cubicle, shuddering at what was transpiring in NYC, and realizing that life is too short too spending it not doing what you love. I'd always loved cooking, but when I was first deciding what I wanted to be when I "grew up" in the late 60's, I decided that cooking for a living wouldn't make enough money, so instead it seems that I decided to jump from one low paying office job to another mostly. Sometimes, I'd work in the nonprofit sector for even less! . My job discription now is "Baker, Pastry Chef," but it's not a high paying position for sure. I do love what I get to do - who wouldn't love a job working with chocolate and whipped cream!!- but I have to admit that I hadn't realized that there's workplace politics that happen everywhere. Had I the foresight to see the coming of the foodie revolution, maybe I be at a different place now, but, it seems, I'll be working for the foreseeable future unless I win the lottery!!
I, like you, read cookbooks for the information, not to find recipes. I cook by "feel," and always have. My late husband could never understand why I had so many cook books, and when he'd ask for me to make a meal that we'd had already, Id try to receate it with variable results. He'd grown up with a Mom that cooked about 6 different meals over and over again his whole life, specializing in putting together can and boxes that she bought at the store. I don't think he'd ever had a fresh vegetable or a salad. Not my style for sure, mine's Elegant Peasant - which does happen to be the title of one of my books. BTW, I have to say that I had a moment of silence for your lost cookbooks. I can't imagine what I do if it happened to me.
If you ever have a question about a food topic, I'd either have the anwser, or I'd know where to go for the answer probably. I'd also be willing to talk cookbooks at any time.
Again, thanks for wonderful words about my library.
