Thanks for the SantaThing picks. The Carroll looks really good. The Flint book really does have an awful cover to overcome though. DAW and Baen really love their schlocky covers.

You're welcome! I think Mistborn is probably Sanderson's strongest novel, so it's a good one to start with. If you like it, you should try Warbreaker. It's free on Sanderson's website, and a great read.

I noticed that you were a fan of Ryszard Kapuscinski, so I thought I'd let you know that a small Canadian press, Biblioasis, has just brought out a volume of his selected poetry. It's the only edition of Kapuscinski's poetry available in english. It's called I Wrote Stone, and was translated from the Polish by Diana Kuprel and Marek Kusiba.

His verse is interesting, and as one would expect, thoughtful, philosophical, aphoristic and engaged politically, morally and viscerally with the world around him. It's something all fans of Kapuscinski should read, a book that meant a lot to him, and that he worked very hard to see published before his death. It's a shame, alas, that he did not quite make it.

Anyway, it's available from Biblioasis. Online (www.biblioasis.com, www.amazon.com) and anywhere else you can find good books. Check it out.

howdy!

I was poking around with the stats and saw that we share a decent number of books, none of which play into my rpg geekery, so I added you to my interesting libraries list. It seems that we share similar tastes across a decently-sized spectrum. Most of the high ranking people I share books with are either roleplayers or star wars geeks, so I thought it'd be nice to see what someone with similar tastes has outside of those geekospheres.

I received the two books you picked for me from Amazon before Christmas. As I am single, living alone, going for Christmas to my niece's, thus Christmas Eve and morning are pretty quiet filled with memories of waking up excited to open the presents sitting under the tree. LibraryThing and you combined to give me at least one really nice surprise this Christmas and I thank you. The two books look very interesting and you did a great job of finding something I might find appealing. When I saw them my first thought was - Yes, I might have picked these myself.

I have two LT Early Reviewers books to finish so I will delay reading these two until I do that but they are next on the top of my TBR pile, which is way big.

For Pasadena-area bookstores, after Vroman's it gets a little thin. Cliff's Books across the street is an okay used bookstore, but the turnover rate is quite low so I don't go there frequently. Book Alley which used to be down the block from those two just moved to a new larger store near PCC; I haven't been there yet but it looks like they have a lot more room.

There's supposed to be a good used bookstore in Glendale (on Brand, just south of the 134) but I haven't made it out there yet.

I'm neither a current or former grad student. In fact, I never completed college. I never seemed to have the discipline to attend class on a regular basis. I started a business instead. I enjoy what I do but there are times I wonder what my life would be like had I applied myself to my studies and taken advantage of an education.
