Informazioni su di meI do so love cataloging my books. I'm also an avid reader and an author of mostly short fiction. I don't blame you if you've never heard of me.

In my free time, I do software-related work for NASA, and spend time with my wife and a nuisance of house cats.

Informazioni sulla mia bibliotecaBooks to the ceiling,
Books to the sky,
My pile of books is a mile high.
How I love them! How I need them!
I'll have a long beard by the time I read them.
-Arnold Lobel

My library contains all the books I have read and still own, and all the books I am currently reading.

Additionally, if I have borrowed a book from somebody or the public library, they will appear here.

I tend to have borderline bibliophily, so I do enjoy collecting books, even if the subject matter doesn't interest me. I'll read them all anyway, because that's what a good bibliophile does.

I dole out stars depending on how many relative utils a book provides me. 5 stars is equivalent to 2 relative utils; 4 stars is equivalent to 1 relative util; 3 stars is equivalent to 0 relative utils; 2 stars is equivalent to -1 relative util; and 1 star is equivalent to -2 relative utils. Half stars would naturally fall somewhere between the two (and a single half star is a truly horrid book for me).

Here it is in more humorous terms:

0.0 - I haven't read it, or haven't gotten around to rating it.
0.5 - I wouldn't wish this book on my worst enemy.
1.0 - I pray to the powers that be for an acute case of alexia.
1.5 - I would wish this book on my worst enemy, if the Geneva Convention allows.
2.0 - The Half Price Books employees are on a first-name basis with me.
2.5 - Can I have my time back, plz?
3.0 - Neither a borrower nor a lender be.
3.5 - This book was definitely worth reading.
4.0 - This is a good book.
4.5 - This is a pretty danged good book.
5.0 - This is (one of the) the best book(s) I've ever read!

I appreciate the review. I imagine you read the book online, which makes me all the more grateful for the kind words. By the way, I did get a copy of The Image of Death. It wasn't to my taste either (I read maybe 50 pages), but it wasn't quite as excruciatingly bad as I expected. I like your reviews and look forward to reading more.

Alex
Alphabetically inferior? LOL!
The things you read !
thumbed your review, looks like a good read, we are all minorities !
Hi Jacob,

Loved your review of The Things They Carried. Tim O'Brien was on my list of favorite authors even before being blown away by his reading of "A Letter to Timmy" when I saw him in person (!) at The National Book Festival in DC this past September.

I've also read Going After Cacciatio and Tomcat in Love, both of which I recommend extraordinarily highly (although others disagree with me about Tomcat in Love).

In my book (no pun intended), this author's the best!

Regards,

Madeline
A note of appreciation for the yeoman work you do on various threads--but particularly Writer-Readers--as a parliamentarian (defining the TOS, among other things), an investigative reporter (unearthing where people are coming from), and an all-around voice of cool sanity.
Hello Jacob,

I was delighted to learn that you won the giveaway of my novel JANEOLOGY. I put it in the mail to you earlier this week. I hope you enjoy it!

All the best,

Karen Harrington

I wanted to reply to you about the "You did it for me: Friendship and Kindness" book. Sorry it was definately in the envelope with the letter and must have fallen out. I can send you another, this time I'll seal and tape it in there :)

Thanks for letting me know!

Thank you for posting a review of Regression, especially since I seem to have eluded your frequently acerbic tongue, by the sounds of some of your admirers!

In the second installment Stew Singleton, whom you met at the very end of Regression, and Anvolussion play a much larger part in questioning the control over technology exerted by Three Eleven. The second novel investigates the dark direction good intentions can take, with Adya playing only a minor role in the story. There is more emphasis on science fiction (aliens, etc) in Evolussion, as well as the reveal of exactly what Adya's offspring can do.

I'll point out, just to confound you, I am pro open source and freeware!

If you have not read Metagame by Sam Lindstrom, I think you might really enjoy that novel based on your response to Regression.
Loved you review of Canal....you tell it like it is! I appreciate that (I'm squeamish)....I had to give up on Jeffrey Deaver for two reasons, they were sick and they were stupid.

Great review!
I'm not even sure exactly how to articulate my disbelief at your so-called “reviewing” techniques. Personally, I find it exceptionally juvenile to attack a writer personally in a review. That alone causes you to lose complete credibility. A legitimate BOOK review addresses elements of the book, period. Since the first post I read from you spent the first four paragraphs attacking the author personally as well as another author you know nothing about, I don’t need to read any further. While I won’t be reading any further on what you have to say, I just thought you might like to know that’s the reaction you’re creating with your obnoxious rants.
Hi Jacob,

You are one scary reviewer. Joyfully merciless, certain, and pretty funny. I'm going to read An Image of Death just to see if it lives up to your review.

sounds good
Just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed your House of Leaves review. I think you totally captured it. (And yes, it was Nietzsche that said if you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back.)
Hello, aethercowboy. Just dropped in to say that I enjoy your additions to LT. Your post on "Block This Member" - http://www.librarything.com/topic/71082#1535746 - for example. Always reasonable, often funny; I enjoy your remarks when I run across them. And only a year on LT; I love it when people jump in with both feet!

Say, you should apply for an Author Badge for your profile, even "if I've never heard of [you]"!
Hi Jacob,

Loved your House Atreides review, I had forgotten what dreck those books were. You might get a giggle out of my off-the-cuff review in one of LT's many games here.

Keep 'er between the ditches.

Jim
Cowboy...dude...just have to say you've really found your niche over the last however many months its been reviewing so many of the classics with your unique, funny voice. It's a pleasure always reading and seeing what you've chosen to review next. I'd be very curious to hear your take on Les Miserables, probably my all time fave, if and when you get around to it. The salon, as you may know, will be embarking upon it after M&M, so maybe then, eh.

Have a great weekend,
Brent

P.S. My Dad worked for the government too, so we're practically related.

Thanks for the kind words about Patient Zero, Jacob. I've gotten lots of encouraging feedback about the book and about Joe Ledger. He's a blast to write.
Hey, I just read and enjoyed An Occurence at Oakpost Sundries! The proper response from you would be, "You don't say!"
